Engagement context
Started as a Senior Android Engineer contractor through Alborati LLC in March 2021, embedded in Wayfair’s Loyalty & Financing team. Converted to full-time Senior Android Engineer in May 2022, progressing to Android Lead. Wayfair reported $11.851B in net revenue for fiscal year 2024 (Feb 20, 2025 full-year results) — context for the scale of the platform and the stakes of every change shipped to it.
The problem
Two product areas needed to work, and both had hard external dependencies. Wayfair’s financing offering — giving customers the ability to pay for furniture and home goods over time via a range of third-party lenders — was already live but required ongoing lender onboarding, portal integration work, and maintenance as lender relationships and products changed. Each new lender added a new integration surface that had to be built, tested, and maintained alongside the existing ones.
The larger unsolved problem was loyalty. Wayfair did not have a paid loyalty program on Android. Building one meant not just the product — it meant the checkout integration, the member-state management, the cross-brand scope (the program covers five Wayfair brands), and a launch date on October 22, 2024 that was not soft.
Separately, the Android codebase had performance and maintainability issues that slowed the whole team. API calls were placed far from the point of use. The tooling available for environment switching during debugging was slow. Promotional campaigns like WayDay required the codebase to support time-bound feature changes that did not exist yet.
The work
- Built and shipped Wayfair’s Rewards program on Android for the October 22, 2024 public launch — the $29/year paid loyalty program covering five brands: Wayfair, AllModern, Birch Lane, Joss & Main, and Perigold.
- Delivered Wayfair’s Financing feature on Android, integrating a multi-lender network: Affirm, Bread Pay, Klarna, Afterpay via Cash App, Citizens Pay, Acima, Katapult, and Progressive Leasing-class partners.
- Managed third-party lender relationships on the Android side, including onboarding new lenders with new code changes to support their portals.
- Built a configuration management tool that enabled rapid environment switching for debugging — reducing context-switching overhead across the Android team.
- Built a dynamic text and layout formatting utility that effectively turned the backend into a CMS for in-app styling: shaped borders, dynamic promotional text, visual treatments that could be changed server-side without an app release.
- Reworked API call placement to move network calls closer to the point of use, delivering a measurable improvement in cart load time.
- Refactored the codebase to support time-bound feature changes — enabling Wayfair’s WayDay promotional events to be deployed safely without manual code changes at campaign launch.
- Maintained Play Store listing health, responding rapidly to app review screening flags — zero-delisting outcome across the engagement period.
The outcome
Wayfair Rewards launched on October 22, 2024 — the $29/year paid loyalty program covering five Wayfair brands. The contract-to-full-time conversion is the most direct signal a contract-skeptical buyer has available: Wayfair saw enough in the work to want it inside rather than contracted.
Seven internal recognition awards in the first year across two company-wide recognition categories.
The dynamic text and layout tool reduced the dependency on app releases for promotional and content changes — changes that previously required a code deploy can now be made server-side. The cart load-time improvement from API call restructuring is live in production across Wayfair’s Android user base.

What it demonstrates
This is Build & Operate in an embedded-contractor-to-employee arc — and the conversion is the proof that the model works. The typical objection to contractors is “they’re not invested.” The conversion offer is the rebuttal, in writing, from the client.
The Financing work demonstrates multi-lender fintech integration at retail scale — not a sandbox integration but a production system touching real purchase flows. The Rewards launch demonstrates the ability to ship a date-certain product launch in a large codebase with real stakes. The tooling built for the team demonstrates the difference between a contractor who does the ticket and one who improves the system they’re working in.
